Slot Canyon Surrender - Unforgettable

This retreat was undoubtedly one of our most memorable adventures yet. From the breathtaking narrow canyons to the warmth of shared recovery, every moment felt alive with meaning. The combination of natural beauty, deep connection, and incredible food made this weekend in Escalante truly unforgettable.

Exploring Peekaboo and Spooky Slots

The adventure began with the exploration of Peekaboo and Spooky Slots, two of the most stunning and narrow slot canyons in Escalante. Walking through these tight, twisting passages was exhilarating. The walls rose high on either side, glowing with rich reds and oranges that shifted with the sunlight. It was a challenge to navigate the narrow paths, but that only added to the thrill.

Spooky Slot, true to its name, had an eerie beauty. The shadows played tricks on the eyes, and the silence was profound. We moved carefully, mindful of the delicate environment and each other. The narrowness made it a perfect metaphor for our recovery journey—sometimes tight and challenging, but always leading to light.

Along the way, we even made a tarantula friend. Spotting this creature reminded us of the unexpected moments that make adventures special. And yes, everyone got out alive, which was a tall order given the tricky terrain!

The Homes That Felt Like Sanctuaries

After the day's adventure, returning to our housing felt like coming home to peace and comfort. The Birch Creek home impressed us with its spaciousness and huge windows that framed the natural landscape outside. It was a place where we could breathe deeply and reflect on the day’s experiences.

The Cliff House home was equally spectacular, with unique architectural features that overlooked the area. Sitting on the deck, watching the sunset over Escalante, we felt a deep sense of gratitude. These homes were more than just places to stay—they were part of the healing process, offering space for quiet moments and connection.

A Culinary Experience Beyond Expectations

One of the weekend’s major highlights was the cooking by Nate Benson, an award-winning chef and pitmaster. Nate’s skills turned every meal into a celebration. The steaks were huge and perfectly cooked, juicy and tender. The gouda mashed potatoes were silky smooth, a comforting side that paired beautifully with the meat.

But the feast didn’t stop there. We enjoyed vegetarian mushroom tacos that were packed with flavor, homemade rolls fresh from the oven, a vibrant pasta salad, and pulled pork that melted in the mouth. Every dish was crafted with care and skill, elevating our retreat meals to a new level.

Good food nourishes the body, and in recovery, that nourishment supports the soul. Nate’s cooking brought us together around the table, creating moments of joy and connection that complemented our work in the 12 steps.

The Heart of the Retreat: The 12 Steps and Connection

While the adventure and food were unforgettable, the most important part of the retreat was the work we did together in recovery. The 12 steps provided a framework for healing from sexual addiction, and the meetings and shares created a space where honesty and vulnerability were welcomed.

Each share was a reminder that we are not alone in this journey. The connections we built on retreat gave us strength to face challenges outside this setting. Healthy relationships formed here allow us to connect in more supportive and meaningful ways in everyday life.

The retreat was a reminder that recovery is not just about individual effort but about community. The support we give and receive helps us all do just a little bit better each day.

Carrying the Experience Forward

As the weekend came to a close, it was clear that this adventure in Escalante was more than just a trip. It was a step forward in our recovery journeys, a chance to surrender to the process and find strength in nature, food, and fellowship.

The memories of narrow slot canyons, the warmth of the homes, the incredible meals, and the shared stories will stay with us. These moments remind us that recovery is possible, even in the face of challenges like sexual addiction.

Until we meet again on the next adventure, we carry these lessons with us—ready to face whatever comes next with courage and connection.
